For my final project, I created a chair which was modeled parametrically in grasshopper and rhino. Specifically, the chair’s form was modeled in rhino, and the parameters including the material thickness, slices, metal rod placement, and width were all modeled in grasshopper. As well as actually laying the slices out on the canvas for fabrication.

Once the slices were laid out, they were input into rhinoCAM, where they were converted into files that were understandable for the CNC router used to cut them out. I then purchased all my materials, including 3/4 inch birch plywood, which fi the exact specs of my model, and prepped the CNC router to cut them out.

Here is my grasshopper file

I was honestly shocked by how accurate the final form came out compared to the model. I feel like I nailed the preview spacing and sizing to match the dimensions of my materials, and the dimensions of the body.

It’s also functional and comfortable to sit on!.
